MY CAREER AS A
SCULPTOR:
I was born
and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. I attended the University
of Utah and studied Biology and Mathematics in the Honors
Program. My interest in sculpture came from a desire to
follow a stimulating career which challenged me intellectually but
also required a physical effort. This basic foundation of
knowledge of the "elements of life", from sub-atomic particles to
astrophysics, has given me a broad outlook on the interplay of
life's elements, including the realm of humanity.
My interest is in the
sculptural juxtaposition of characters and their interaction in the
world. My work often uses a traditional or classical theme as
a starting point, and then looks beyond it for a line of tension or
a thread of interplay. The expression of an idea with a
subject and theme -- in the same way a story or novel is written --
is the relevant point: the medium happens to be
sculpture.
As a "hands on" person, my sculptural
endeavors follow the classical format of education through
apprenticeship and working knowledge. This has been tempered
through the years with an ongoing interest in self-education and the
first hand exposure to the Master works in the galleries here and in
Europe.
My work began with the noted western bronze sculptor,
Edward J. Fraughton, one of the founding members of the National Academy of
Western Art. I managed his Salt Lake City foundry for two
years.
In 1978, I moved to the East Coast and
attended the Fudakis Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia where I studied under Evangelos Frudakis.
More studies were undertaken at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I also apprenticed with sculptor Charles Parks,
former President of the National Sculpture Society, in Wilmington,
Delaware. By 1979, I started my own foundry in Ashland,
Delaware. Later that year, I met Suzanne, an artist in
textiles and needlework. We were married a few years later. We have been at our
present home and studio in Cochranville, Pennsylvania in 1981.
The foundry experience of personally
casting and finishing several thousand sculptures for dozens of
artists over the past decades has given me physical exposure to
virtually every type of bronze working style and format being done
today. Meeting the demands of other artists on their work,
through their eyes, has given me an unusual insight into the
medium.
I was elected as a Professional Member of the National Sculpture Society in 1991;
and have been a member of the
American Artists Professional League for as many years. I have shown my works in
nationally juried exhibits in New York, Boston, St. Louis, Florida
and other East Coast cities. In addition, my sculpture is displayed
in galleries in the Brandywine Valley and Philadelphia area as well
as Europe. My clients include collectors from around the
world.
